She introduced Tejano into mainstream music. Selena, the Tejano performer who fatally shot dead during a shooting incident, has sparked a Latino reaction that can be compared with the response to Elvis Presley's and John Lennon's deaths. Selena was a hugely popular singer among Latinos in North America. But her music was a hit with both the young and the old. Selena was an asexual, flamboyant performer on stage who was sometimes known as her as the Latina Madonna. In her off-stage life, Selena was also a strong role model as she was active in anti-drug and AIDS campaigns.
